Overcoming depression can be a challenge, but by understanding the warning signs and symptoms of depression and how to combat negative feelings, sadness can disappear.

Overcoming depression can take a while. It isn’t a quick fix and can often take months or even years to truly solve this problem. But it is a problem and well worth the efforts of trying to cure depression.

Warning Signs of Depression

Depression can have many symptoms and not all will show in everyone. Some of the common signs of depression include:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Sadness
  • Lack of enthusiasm
  • Being socially withdrawn
  • Feelings of hopelessness
  • Loss of self esteem
  • Poor concentration
  • Excessive sleeping

Many people wonder how someone can become depressed. There are many different causes for depression. Often, depression occurs when there is a loss or change in life, like a death in the family or a move out-of-state. Major life events can often lead to emotional trauma that causes depression.

Some medications can also cause depression. If someone is experiencing excessive sadness or thoughts of suicide they should speak with their doctor about the medications they are taking. There are often alternatives that do not have this side effect.

Marital problems are also a leading cause of depression. Someone who is in an abusive or unhappy relationship may feel depressed. Married couples should focus on complimenting one another, being supportive and understanding others' feelings, and maintaining good communication.

Ways to Overcome Depression

There are many ways to combat depression without relying upon medication or other expensive treatments.

One simple way to simply ignore depression and negative thoughts is to get involved with different activities and new hobbies. It will give the depressed person something to do besides focusing on everything they feel is wrong with their life. It will also give them something to discuss with others so they will perform better in social situations and possibly make new friends.

Someone who is depressed should focus on a variety of activities. They should find things that they find relaxing (such as meditation or Yoga), things that will accomplish goals they’re interested in (going back to school or cleaning out the garage), and activities that will help others.

Depression often causes people to be too afraid of failing to try new things. Someone who is depressed must overcome that and do things that may not be very familiar to them. This will help them find new hobbies and meet new people.

People who are depressed should also try to avoid negative thinking and focus on the good things in life instead of the bad. Often, it’s too easy to get caught up in what’s wrong and people forget to appreciate the good. Negative emotions cause people to stop trying and instead of getting out of the situation that is upsetting them, they only make it worse with their negative self talk.

It is easy to become comfortable with depression and how to have self esteem and enjoy activities. This is why someone who is depressed needs to push himself to try new things and replace negative self talk with more positive attitudes.

By allowing friends and family to show sympathy when acts of depression are performed (crying, complaining, etc.), the mindset of depression is only reinforced. Instead, friends and family should ignore these behaviors and reward the person when they are happy, gracious, and fun to be around.

Instead of dwelling on problems, the depressed person should work on fixing them. Some situations aren’t as bad as they may seem to someone who is already upset. Picking one problem at a time to fix will make things begin to seem better. There are many solutions to be found online (ranging from quitting smoking to consolidating debt) and family and friends will also lend a helpful hand if asked.

Having a close network of friends gives a person connections to reach out to in times of trouble. Friends will help them feel more connected and less isolated and alone, which can also help with their feelings of depression.

A person suffering from depression should try to notice when depression occurs, what seems to cause it, the times of day they feel most depressed. They should also keep track of when they feel happy and what activities they feel enjoyment from. By also journaling happy experiences, positive traits about themselves, and uplifting quotes, they’ll be learning how to focus on the positive.

Relaxation, meditation, and exercise are other good ways to combat depression.

Sometimes changing attitudes can be very difficult. One way to do this is to first change actions. By smiling, laughing, and acting as if a good time is being had, a person can condition themselves to adjust to these new behaviors and learn new attitudes this way.
